Political Worldviews on Spirituality
What influences your behavior? Where did your morals & values come from?
Democratic View: All conventional religions & beliefs are equal & essentially considered a mere hobby or personal preference with no real impact on practical life. Religious issues & convictions should be kept private, especially if they compete with government established morality or promote one competing religion above the others. All religions & beliefs must be subordinate to government compliance & a hypothetical societal comfort level. Politicians with this view can claim a conventional religion, but often capitulate to a government morality while operating contrary to the tenants of that conventional religion (i.e. President Obama & Hillary Clinton claim to be Christians, but advocate abortion & homosexuality which are solidly contrary to Christian teaching).
The idea of separation of church & state is redefined to mean there should be no bearing of any competing religions on the government's morality (state religion). With an impotent & subordinate perspective of other religions, this view often projects its ideologies on them (i.e. Islam is a religion of peace, Christianity should accept homosexuality, etc). The presence of other religions should be increased to help diffuse any longstanding religions (i.e. allow Muslims to flood into our country from Syria & other countries largely unchecked).
Republican View: Adherents to all religions, beliefs or unbeliefs are to be respected, but all religions or beliefs are not equal. Beliefs can be right or wrong & lead to good or bad consequences – personally, nationally or globally. Religious freedom underpins all freedom. If a government dictates a non-truth based morality, oppression against those holding traditional values will ensue. The phrase “separation of church & state” was originally included in a letter to a religious institution ensuring them the government would not encroach on their beliefs & their subsequent behavior.
Since not all beliefs are equal, some are good & some are bad. A belief is bad if it is not based on truth such that when acted on either produces harm or fails to be beneficial. Most Western civilizations (North/Central America & Western Europe) were founded on Judeo-Christian morals & have thrived because they were based on truth (despite apostasy in recent decades). Thus, people come from all over to live in them. By contrast, nations founded on non-truth based beliefs, including those akin to the Democratic view, have failed to be as prosperous or free. When those in government get morality wrong, it impacts all of its citizens. In fact, because of false belief systems, many nations are dangerous to live in or even visit. These false beliefs must be identified, understood & subsequently combated if they become a threat to our nation (i.e. radical Islam of Iran & ISIS, communism of China & North Korea, etc).
