Mushrooms! Mushrooms!
4-May-09
Maybe you don’t like eating fungus, but for those of who like mushrooms, I thought of this while hunting some wild ones. For us fungus fans, there’s nothing like finding the elusive morel mushrooms in the short window of a season when they’re “in bloom”.
Looking for God’s truth in the Bible is like hunting mushrooms. If you don’t go looking for it in the first place, you won’t find it (Dt 4.29, Mt 7.7, Heb 11.6). And because Holy Scripture is unlike any other book or writing, it is alive (Heb 4.12) & God is able to reveal new things to you in a particular passage, even if you have read it 100 times.
Similarly, I found 1 large morel & thought I would go back to the same place & look around. I had already looked there for more when I found the first one, but I knew that they’re easy to miss if you aren’t carefully searching. So I went back, intent on finding more & what did I find? I landed 2 more big ones. I went back yet a third time & scored 1 more big one. By that time, it was getting dark & the mosquitoes were scoring on me. Too bad, I just know there’s more out there to be found.
If I would have looked for ‘shrooms in a parking lot, at a hardware store, on my roof or in the road, I not only would have came up empty-handed, I would be crazy. There is only 1 place to find God’s written Words & that’s in the Bible (Ps 119.160, Jn 17.17). Not to mention, picking & eating the wrong mushrooms can be dangerous (2 Cor 10.5, Col 2.2-4, 8).
If I had not looked for those morels at all, been too busy to look for them or didn’t believe they were even out there, they would have been there just the same & it would have been my loss (Ps 34.8, Isa 55.6, Dan 9.13).
If I would have stopped searching after finding the first fungi or thought I had exhausted the supply, I would have totally missed out on all the others that were there for my delight (Ps 1.2, Jn 6.63, 68, Acts 20.32, Col 3.16, 2 Tim 2.15, 2 Pt 1.3).
Just as the mushrooms are only here for a short time, we are only here for a time (Jas 4.14), but God’s Word lasts forever (Lk 21.33). God wants us to seek His truth & put it to use for Him (Ps 90.12, 17). The treasured morels are hard to buy for under $25/lb, but the God’s truths beyond value (Prov 23.23), yet readily available (Prov 1.20-23). Jesus teaches about the unequaled value regarding the truth of the kingdom of heaven using parables about hidden treasure (Mt 13.44) & fine pearls (Mt 13.45-46).
Found any morel mushrooms? Found any more truth?
"And you, my son Solomon, acknowledge the God of your father, and serve Him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the LORD searches every heart and understands every motive behind the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will reject you forever.” – 1 Chron 28.9
Blessed is the man who finds wisdom,
the man who gains understanding,
for she is more profitable than silver
and yields better returns than gold.
She is more precious than rubies;
nothing you desire can compare with her. – Prov 3.13-15
The fear (reverence) of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge – Prov 1.7a
