This recent controversy over the Indiana’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) is quite interesting to say the least. Such modern controversies are like icebergs – only a small visible portion sits atop the bulk of it dangerously lurking below the surface - a real hazard for any ships passing by. And so it is with Indiana’s RFRA.
Considering the fact that 19 other states have similar laws and there is even a federal counterpart, I can’t help but believe the main weight of the controversy is due to the fact that Governor Mike Pence is a strong conservative presidential candidate. With a looming presidential election, the political and media machines are ravenously looking for material even if they have to invent it. They have taken an otherwise legitimate law and feverishly spun it into their favorite divisive political weapon – the gay agenda. But don’t take the bait – the law has no GLBT language in it. RFRA is all about protecting religious freedom and rights of conscience – the very principals our country was founded on and the soil of its freedom and success.
To show the nature of this political stunt, it took no time for presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton to decry “Discrimination!” and start tweeting a pro-GLBT siren song. Then, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, former White House Chief of Staff for President Obama & currently running for re-election, starts defaming the Hoosier state and it’s governor while trying to lure businesses from Indiana to Chicagoland. And if I had to guess, I’d say that David Axlerod, Emanuel’s friend and former top advisor to Presidents Clinton and Obama who has surely been party to the downfall of many opposing candidates, has probably had a part in stirring the depths of Chicago politics in an attempt to sink any approaching conservative vessels. Given the way this is going, I’d gather that Democrats are really afraid of Mike Pence, so he must be a strong contender. Ironically, it was President Bill Clinton who signed the federal RFRA bill in 1993 and Emanuel’s Illinois has had a similar RFRA since 1998.
Nonetheless, the hostility towards religious freedom is chilling. It goes to show that the heart of the liberal and LGBT agendas is not careful study of the facts, or tolerance, or freedom; the basis is a belief system – the religion of humanism with government as the highest authority dictating right and wrong to the masses. That’s the stuff tyranny is made of. It has no tolerance for the freedom of competing religious beliefs or individual rights of conscience. This is evidenced by the pervasive hysteria over RFRA and is exactly why we need such laws.
