Just what is Good Friday about?
Published 2-Apr-10 in The Times
Wonder what Good Friday’s all about? Christians celebrate Good Friday because Jesus died on a Friday. While it seems unusual to celebrate someone’s death as “good”, Jesus Christ was no ordinary man. Christians hold that Jesus is God in the flesh. This God-man foretold unique details to His followers regarding both His death and resurrection. And indeed, Jesus rose from the dead on the third day after His death, just as He predicted. Thus, you have Easter Sunday.
While that’s amazing enough, it isn’t the reason its called “Good Friday”. A Christian is one who trusts that Jesus died on the cross to pay the price for all their bad deeds, satisfying God’s justice and in turn, God forgives all their sins, qualifies them for heaven and gives them new life. Now that’s good! You can learn more by reading the Bible – try the books of Matthew and Romans.
