Vacancy
While in college, your roommate parties a bit too much, gets kicked out of school & is not allowed to return home. Meanwhile, his lifestyle also causes him to be late for work on a regular basis & he consequently gets fired. Because you are nice (& are obligated by contract), you agree to pay the full rent for a couple months. Your roommate then informs you that he is making sufficient money to pay rent & you are grateful for the relief. You then learn that the reason he has money is because he is dealing drugs & selling pirated music & inappropriate videos. Fortunately for you, this news comes just as your apartment contract is up. You quickly pack up your things & happily move in with your girlfriend who lives across town & even closer to campus. A few weeks later, while you are making breakfast, your girlfriend reads to you from the newspaper that your former roommate was arrested & is now in jail.
CLICK HERE TO FIND OUT: Whose sin is it anyway?
While your former roommate has a long laundry list of obvious sins, you are not off the hook. You may be thinking that you were nice to him, you paid his rent, you didn’t turn him into the police, you were responsibly doing well in school & holding a job. But according to God’s holy standard & unobstructed view of your life, you put yourself & your girlfriend in a precarious situation when you moved in together. Such living arrangements invite the overwhelming temptation of sexual sin outside God’s intended safety bounds of marriage. It is foolish to believe that it will not result in sexual sin & is assumed to be the case by your peers anyway. It has long-term consequences of many kinds that far outweigh any short-term benefits like convenience or saving money. You have fallen short of God’s perfect standard.
Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral. – Heb 13.4
Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body. – 1 Cor 6.18
Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. – 1 Cor 6.9-11
