Romans 2.1-4
_1 You, therefore, have
no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point
you judge the other, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass
judgment do the same things. 2 Now we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. 3 So when you, a mere man, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment? 4
Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, tolerance and
patience, not realizing that God’s kindness leads you toward repentance?
_This passage uses the same Greek word for “judge” as Mt 7. And again, the warning is specifically
against hypocritical judgment given the repeated phrase “you…do the same
things”. Also, note that the basis of
the standard is highlighted – “God’s judgment…is based on truth” vs. man’s
judgment (corrupted). When we live life
without regard for God’s revealed truth in the Bible, we not only run the risk
of being a hypocrite, but also will eventually run into God’s judgment. In the end, whether it is you or someone
else, the goal of God’s revealing standard is repentance – turning from sinful
destroying of relationships & turning towards God.
