Truth Rocks!
13-Apr-09
Studying & meditating on God’s Word is like digging. For instance, imagine you are digging down in different & remote places. Everywhere you dig, you strike rock. Digging around more, you find that there are not several rocks, but 1 large rock that impedes every place you have dug. The truth of God’s Word is like that enormous rock. You will find that it is the underpinning of all that is around you and, indeed, all of life itself.
I love reading through Scripture & making connections between various passages of both the Old & New Testaments. Then, by God’s grace & Spirit, hopefully I can make practical application of those truths in my life. It’s possible to do that because it’s the same unchanging God (Mal 3.6, Jas 1.17) powerfully teaching, rebuking, correcting & training (2 Tim 3.16-17) different people who have the same spiritual heart problems that you & I do which transcend all time & culture (Mk 7.20-23).
Not only that, God’s truth deals with the major life questions that affect our worldview or how we understand what goes on around us. God’s truth, whether we have recognized & believed it or not, is interconnected on a larger level. Note that it really doesn’t matter if we believe the large rock is there or not or if we believe it to be differently than it really is. It is what it is & it is there.
There are also situations in life where you can dig & hit something you think is the big rock, when it is really just a smaller one & you have to dig deeper to get the real thing. Let the small rocks represent false & wrong teachings. Jesus teaches a parable that urges us to be cautious about what we build our thinking on. Otherwise, it will end in catastrophe.
"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash." – Jesus in Mt 7.24-27
This parable has powerful meaning when it’s applied to various religious beliefs which is the ultimate intention. God’s church is compared to a “spiritual house” that is built upon Christ who is the “precious Cornerstone” (1 Pet 2.4-6). If your beliefs are not directly built upon the actual truths of Scripture, you will have fiery eternal consequences (1 Cor 3.11-15). There is particular caution for those who don’t know the Scriptures &/or are misled by those from within & without religious institutions who distort them (Isa 5.13-16, Mt 22.29, 2 Pet 3.16, 1 Jn 4.6).
As is the theme of this website, Jesus says, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (Jn 14.6) & “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free" (Jn 8.31-32). He also says, “for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to Me" (Jn 18.37). And in a prayer to the Father, He said “Your Word is truth” (Jn 17.17). Know that you can trust Christ & His Word!
Keep digging for God’s Truth!
Since you are my rock and my fortress, for the sake of Your Name lead and guide me. – Ps 31.3
Find rest, O my soul, in God alone;
my hope comes from Him.
He alone is my rock and my salvation;
He is my fortress, I will not be shaken.
My salvation and my honor depend on God;
He is my mighty rock, my refuge.
Trust in Him at all times, O people;
pour out your hearts to Him,
for God is our refuge.
Selah.
– Ps 62.5-8
